Book Week Costume Ideas for Teachers

Book Week Adult Costumes

Teachers no doubt have this year's fast-approaching Book Week circled on their calendars, and many are looking forward to the annual celebration of literacy and reading. The upcoming events have many teachers thinking about which fancy dress costumes they'll be wearing during Book Week as well. Dressing up for the occasion lets teachers join in the fun while encouraging their students to explore the wonderful world of books. It's also a great way to introduce students to some great children's literature classics. Here are some suggestions for awesome Book Week costumes for teachers!

The Wizard of Oz Dorothy Adult Women's CostumeDorothy Gale from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

Many people may think of the live action movie The Wizard of Oz when dressing up as Dorothy Gale, and our officially licensed Wizard of Oz Dorothy costumes look like they were lifted straight out of the film itself! From the blue gingham dress and brown hair plaits to the ruby slippers and her pet Toto in a basket, Dorothy is always ready for a Book Week adventure.

The Big Bad Wolf from Red Riding Hood by Charles Perrault

Teachers need to be careful that the costumes they choose for Book Week won't frighten young children, but the Big Bad Wolf dressed in a granny's nightgown is more comical than scary. With a wolf mask, an attached tail, and faux-fur cuffs, all that's needed to complete the look and delight the little ones is a basket filled with goodies for grandmother.

Raggedy Anne and Andy by Johnny Gruelle

Teachers will earn high marks from their students when they dress up as Raggedy Anne and Raggedy Andy, the beloved characters that inspired the dolls that children have loved for generations. Available in both regular and plus sizes, these costumes let teachers sail through Book Week comfortably as well. Classic Raggedly Anne outfits feature a blue and white polka dot dress, a white apron, white bloomers, and striped stockings. Andy costumes sport a red and white shirt with attached blue pants, and striped socks. Both come with red wigs attached to hats. With the right makeup to finish the look, children will wonder if their cuddly dolls have come to life.

Robin HoodRobin Hood Deluxe Adult Costume from medieval folklore

Stories of the famous outlaw who stole from the rich and gave to the poor have been popular for centuries, and they've inspired multiple books, movies, and cartoons as well. Teachers have broad range when dressing up as Robin Hood or Maid Marion. The most impressive costumes include details like a leather-look capelet and boot tops, a belt with buckles, and an oversized shirt. A hat with a feather accent adds the perfect finishing touch.

Many schools throughout the country hold fancy dress parades, special events, and other activities during Book Week to inspire literacy and promote reading. Book Week in Australia runs from the 18th to the 25th of August this year, so it's a good idea for teachers to choose which costume they want to wear as soon as possible.
