As one of the the newest superheroes to come out of Marvel's ranks, Black Panther is here and is rapidly increasing in popularity! First appearing in the comic book Fantastic Four #52 in July 1966, Black Panther has appeared in many different Marvel comic series and media adaptations over the years, as well as being T'Challa, the king and protector of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. Black Panther was originally created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

Black Panther began as the superhero alter ego of T'Challa after the death of his father T'Chaka, the previous Black Panther. The mantle is handed down through combat to the person who is best fitted to protect Wakanda. Black Panther possesses enhanced abilities due to drinking the essence of a heart-shaped herb, as well as proficiency in science, physical training, hand-to-hand combat, wealth, and Wakandan technology. Black Panther was the first superhero of African descent in mainstream American comic books, closely followed by the likes of Falcon, Luke Cage, Blade, and the John Stewart iteration of Green Lantern.
